Madam Ellen Yeow, 1947-2012

As we bid farewell to our dearest Chairlady, here's the journey of her life. Indeed, we have lost a dedicated leader but her principle of life, will always be our guide in facing obstacles and challenges. Following is special report from The Star.

Cheers, Ellen

By SUZANNE LAZAROO

star2@thestar.com.my

Malaysia’s wine scene recently bid farewell to Ellen Yeow, one of the pioneers of the industry. We raise a glass in memory of a trailblazer.

ELLEN Yeow had tannins running through her veins. Had she been poured into a glass, she would have been a complex, formidable red, those tannins forming a solid backbone but leading into a long, sweet finish. That was Tai Kar Cheh Ellen (big sister Ellen) to those who knew her, a fitting moniker for the lady who cut such a swathe in a traditionally male-dominated wine scene, and paved the way for many more to follow.

Ellen Yeow, 1947–2012

Yeow died on Aug 21, at the age of 65, after a battle with cancer; her good friends raised one of many last toasts to her in a memorial verse in The Star: “In fertile hills/ along the vines/ and sun kissed grapes/ her spirit walks/ her laughter/ bubbles in a Champagne flute/ her scoldings/ sharp as new born malt/ her friendship/ sweet fragrant dessert wine/ in the deep depths of a dark hued red/ her very being shines/ her soul now/ at journeys end/ in the vineyard of The Lord”. It was a meaningful, wine-sprinkled tribute to an old friend, now far away.

“I can just hear her say ‘such bad verse – can’t you do better than that!’ ... that’s dear Ellen for you!” says lawyer Wong Swee Min, one of the poets and a childhood friend. Together with his younger brother, and Yeow and her cousins, they formed a small band of brothers (and sister) in their stomping grounds of the Hicks Road-Tong Shin Terrace area (now Changkat Bukit Bintang) in KL.

He recalls her as more “snips and snails and puppy dogs’ tails” than “sugar and spice” – hers was a feisty, strong personality that was to stand her in good stead later, when she joined the wine industry.

In the 1970s, the wine industry in Malaysia was still in the embryonic stages, with just a few individuals striving to bring wine culture into the country. Yeow was one of these dedicated wine-lovers.

She joined importers and distributors Caldbeck MacGregor right after she graduated from Britain and returned to KL; although she initially knew very little about spirits and wine, she soon developed a keen interest to complement an already refined palate.

“There weren’t too many women in the wine and spirits industry then, she was among the very first,” says Wong. “That made her unique, and coupled with her friendly and pleasant disposition, willingness to learn and industrious nature, it meant that the macho bosses and veteran colleagues went out of their way to take her under their wings and teach her the trade.

“And being able to match them glass for glass was no doubt a great help when it came to being accepted as ‘one of the boys’,” he adds.

Her sharp palate and great olfactory senses made it easy for her to learn the trade quickly, and sniff out grape treasures.

A passion for fine wine and the art of marketing it was born; and as Yeow’s knowledge and experience grew, so did her involvement with the gourmet scene and several international organisations. She served as president of the KL branch of the International Wine and Food Society from 2000 to 2003, during which time she was awarded the Bronze Andre Simon Medallion.

In 2001, Yeow joined Asiaeuro Wines and Spirits as a consultant advisor, a post she retained to the end. She was responsible for developing the wine portfolio for both New and Old World wines, but was considered an expert particularly in the field of French wines.

“Her keen interest and vast knowledge in this field took Asiaeuro to great heights,” says Toh Sek Piew, Asiaeuro’s operations director and a long-time collaborator of Yeow’s.

“She always had a keen eye for good wines with good value. And during her tenure here at Asiaeuro, she trained a few wine aficionados with strict guidance and tremendous pressure – she only wanted to work with the crème of the crop!”

“Ellen was a loyal and kind friend, and a diligent mentor – however, she was not one to suffer fools gladly! Few are her friends and co-workers who have not at one time or another been soundly scolded for what she considered acts of foolishness or inappropriate conduct,” recalls Wong with fondness.

Yeow believed that everyone should drink the best wine they could afford, with a constant admonishment to not “waste precious liver and stomach space” on plonk.

“Her passion for wine and her willingness to share her knowledge and her bottles of wines and malts brought many of us to not only the enjoyment of them, but also to an understanding and deeper appreciation of their respective subtleties,” says Wong.

“For certain she helped develop the fine wine market in Malaysia beyond plonk and the mundane and ordinary. And she foreshadowed the acceptance and progress of women in the world of wines and sprits in this country – not by the glimmer of a shapely leg glimpsed in a cheongsam slit but by sheer talent and perseverance,” he adds.

Yeow has embarked on her last journey now, no doubt wineglass in hand. The only thing left to say is: Salut and safe passage.

Safer streets in Mont’Kiara

Thought you might interested in as many cases of theft were reported at Mont Kiara's condo. But really not sure, this program actually gonna to be implemented in our area as I know Sunrise has not vested interest in this area.

RESIDENTS of Mont’Kiara and Dutamas can look forward to a safer living environment with the launch of the Sunrise Community Watch.

Recognising the importance of a safe and secured environment, Sunrise Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of UEM Land Holdings Bhd, spearheaded the community-based campaign in partnership with the police.

“With this campaign, we hope to minimise crime besides promoting closer community ties with the law enforcers,” said UEM Land Holdings Bhd CEO Datuk Wan Abdullah Wan Ibrahim.

The campaign includes joint patrols by the police as well as the auxiliary force in addition to crime prevention talks, dialogues and exhibitions by the police.

“Sunrise is currently incorporating modern technologies and we are running trials on the Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) system that can detect and send alerts instantaneously in response to a crime,” Wan Abdullah added.

The neighbourhood has adopted innovative solutions to enhance security; there are foot patrol beats, LED screens to display safety tips and emergency numbers and regular crime prevention awareness activities at the Community Centre. Sunrise had been implementing several security measures since 2005.

As of last year, Sunrise Bhd had set up an Auxiliary Police Unit with 60 trained personnel patrolling the Mont’Kiara and Dutamas vicinity as well as monitoring CCTV surveillance of public roads for suspicious criminal activities.

“We have a total of 45 cameras with the installation of seven additional units at the end of Jalan Kiara to provide coverage for our latest development,” he said.

Kuala Lumpur chief police officer DCP Datuk Mohmad Salleh said this initiative could only be successful with the cooperation and assistance of people who frequented the area. “Neighbourhood watch schemes can help reduce crime by keeping an eye on suspicious behaviour within the neighbourhood. A partnership with the police is the best weapon to fight against crime,” he said.

The launch also featured several booths from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Rakan Cop and traffic police displaying illegal drugs, fake bank notes, photos of road accidents as well as informative brochures on the departments.

Transfer ownership of strata titles

I'm pretty sure few owners had done the transfer. But nevertheless, few owners still in the process of getting the right lawyer to do the job. As stated in the letter by developer dated 15 July 2011, we're supposed to execute the transfer within 12 months.

So, just for a quick references, following are some info I gathered about the process.

What is transfer ownership of strata title?

(1) Any original proprietor or any person or body appointed by a court of competent jurisdiction shall execute the transfer of strata titles to the parcel proprietors within twelve months from the date of issue of strata titles by the Land Administrator or any extended period approved by the Director upon the opening of the strata register.

(2) Any purchaser shall execute complete documents of transfer of strata titles within twelve months or any extended period approved by the Director from the date of notice of transfer of strata titles issued by the original proprietor or from the date of purchase of the parcel, whichever is the later.

(3) Any original proprietor or any person or body appointed by a court of competent jurisdiction or any purchaser who fails to comply with subsection (1) or (2) shall be guilty of an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine of not less than one thousand ringgit and not more than ten thousand ringgit per parcel.

What are the documents that you must provide to your lawyer?

  • Copies of all present and previous Sale & Purchase Agreements (if you are not the first purchaser, to show proof that you are the last buyer in the chain).
  • Copies of present and previous Loan Agreement, Deed of Assignment, Deed of Receipt and Re-assignment (if any).
  • Strata Title (from the developer)
  • Current year quit rent receipt.
  • Current year assessment receipt.

How much to pay for the transfer?
Basically 2 main cost involved which are the legal fee and stamp duty. So far, based on
priced quoted is around RM7k-RM8k.
I'm thinking we could form a group purchase so that we could obtain more competitive fee charged by lawyers. If you've choosen any particular law firm or you're personally know or worked as lawyer, feel free to contact me.
So, owners, please send in your contact if you plan to join in this group before 19 February 2012. At the moment, time is essense, as for execution it took around 3-4 months.
Hopefully we can get it done before the due date this July 2012.

Locations of two more mass rapid transit lines identified

Some updates on the mass rapid transit lines. This news has confirmed the previous rumour saying the station located at the MATRADE and Mont Kiara. If the project goes as plan, need not to say, the potential of Dutamas area is enormous.
Following is the proposed MRT Map alignment.

Under the Greater KL/ Klang Valley Land Public Transport Master Plan draft, the Government has generally identified the locations of the other two mass rapid transit (MRT2) lines. The Greater KL/Klang Valley Region is identified as the critical economic growth centre as it generates over 37% of the nation’s gross domestic product. The region comprises Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Klang, Kajang, Subang Jaya, Selayang, Shah Alam, Ampang Jaya and Sepang.

According to MRT Co, line two, the circle line (MRT 2) and line three (MRT 3) should be completed by 2020.

In the master plan draft, MRT 2 would cater for orbital movements around Kuala Lumpur, provide linkages to major developments identified in the DBKL City Plan such as Matrade and reach existing areas that were currently poorly served. “Orbital movements in KL would be addressed by the provision of a circle line as MRT 2. “This would link existing areas such as the Mid Valley, Mont Kiara, Sentul Timur and Ampang, as well as proposed developments such as Matrade.

“The circle line would encourage modal transfers in corridors that are currently poorly served by public transport as well as providing relief to the radial lines for those direct orbital journeys which have to travel via the city centre,” it said.

It was proposed that the MRT 2 makes use of the Ampang Branch of the Ampang Line to allow a higher frequency service to be provided on the main Star line towards Sri Petaling. The master plan draft says the circle line would be developed in at least two phases.

The first would be the western and southern sections linking Ampang with Mid Valley, Matrade and Sentul. The second phase would line Ampang with Sentul Timur, completing the north eastern sector of the circle line.

An initial estimate suggests a length of 29km for phase one with 22 stations. The second phase would be 12km with eight stations.

Meanwhile, the master plan says MRT 3 or the north-south (NS) line would cater for north-west corridor of Greater Klang Valley which was forecast to be overloaded in the future. “In the northern corridor, even allowing for the upgrade of KTMB, future travel demands indicate that there will be a need to provide enhanced capacity.

“For this reason, a new NS line is proposed to link developing areas such as Sungai Buloh, Kepong and Selayang with the eastern half of the city centre (including Kampung Baru and Kuala Lumpur International Financial District).
